DEMOLITION OF GRAIN SILOS

For a year, I documented the demolition of the grain silos in Kungsängen, Uppsala Sweden. At that time, I was mostly focused on composition, light, dynamics, etc., the aesthetic aspects. But gradually other, more symbolic ideas emerged. The images can have a broader meaning.

There are several aspects: A phenomenon that occurs in several places and marks the end of an era of industry, architecture and urban planning. Like other industrial structures, it is made to give way to people's changing lifestyles and trends in settlement patterns.

It also shows the transience of solid structures with the brutal and dramatic scenes it entails. The relatively short period of the buildings’ existence, culminates in unpredictable, monumental and enigmatic experiences. Open breaks deep into the rigid and "impenetrable" concrete cylinders, exposing spatial secrets in temporary formations, before eventually disappearing forever. Slowly, they fade away from the collective consciousness.

Similarly, other unchallenged rigid social structures and truths have dominated for long periods of time, abandoned and replaced by others, sometimes gradually, without dramatic conflicts, but other times under catastrophic upheavals. Seemingly stable relationships can unexpectedly break apart and explode into major emotional and social crises. The apparent constant turns out to be transient into oblivion.
